Hands down one of the products I frequently educate parents about or swap out of their registry or shopping lists is their baby skincare and bath products.

With newborn skin care, the adage is "less is more." The fewer chemicals, fragrances and additives in newborn skincare products, the better.  Pediatricians advise that too much exposure to chemicals and other potential allergens can set the stage for skin allergies later in life.

The most common skin irritants in baby skincare products are perfumes (particularly products that just list ‘fragrance’ as this is probably synthetic), preservatives (particularly parabens) and artificial colors. If you like some fragrance, opt for baby skin care products that are fragranced with baby-friendly natural essential oils or just good ol’ coconut oil.

My Top Pick: Babo Botanicals Sensitive Baby Daily Hydra Baby Lotion

Babo Botanicals hands down is one of my favorite baby skincare brands. This creamy (not greasy) everyday lotion is great for babies with dry, sensitive, irritated, or eczema prone skin.

It contains 2% Colloidal Oatmeal and ultra moisturizing Calendula, Chamomile, Shea Butter and Jojoba Oil and it’s FRAGRANCE FREE!

2. Dr. Bronner’s Baby Unscented Castile Soap

Dr. Bronner’s is constantly rotating in my shower between peppermint, lavender and rose. Needless to say I’m a big fan. It does not contain any of the essential oils that the other soaps have and it has twice the concentration of saponified olive oil which makes it even more moisturizing.

Dr. Bronner's soaps are exceptionally mild and safe for babies, however they are not tear-free so it's important to be very careful that the soap does not get in your baby's eyes. Read more about what makes “soap” tear-free here.

3. VIVAIODAYS | APRICOT OIL NOURISHING FACE & BODY LOTION

I went deep into the skincare rabbit hole and discovered this brand, Vivaiodays, which I’m excited to try!

This Ayurvedic inspired blend of organic oils & extracts creates a lightweight, nourishing texture ideal for delicate baby skin. Organic Apricot Kernel Oil helps maintain healthy moisture balance, combat rash & may soothe minor hypersensitive skin conditions such as eczema.

4. Coconut Oil

Whether you are buying it to use as skincare or as food, definitely opt for unrefined coconut oil as the refined variety is deodorized and bleached.

Rich in essential fatty acids and proteins, coconut oil nourishes and gently moisturizes skin. Your baby’s skin is more delicate because it’s brand new, thinner, more sensitive, and produces fewer moisturizing oils. For babies, coconut oil can be used as a treatment underneath their locks to help with the symptoms of cradle cap.

5. BareBaby Organics Baby Lotion

Created by a California family who carefully selected each ingredient to ensure they were safe, beneficial, and soothing to baby’s skin.  BareBaby Organics Organic Baby Lotion is made of natural organic ingredients such as shea butter, aloe vera, chamomile, kelp and calendula. It contains no sulfates, parabens, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, dyes or other harmful additives. It also helps reduce skin problems such as eczema, psoriasis & itchiness.
